Montana’s most distinguished architects of the period, Link and Haire, designed both the courthouse and this substantial three-story jail. The steel frame, brick, and stone structure, erected in 1909, for a time served as the courthouse until the new building opened in 1912.

In trouble again Jackson D. Palmer, 36, of Butte was reportedly released from Montana State Prison on Jan. 10 and by Jan. 14, he was housed in the Butte Detention Center. Just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Palmer allegedly was found inside a pickup truck in the 1000 block of West Mercury Street.

According to an arrest affidavit, the teen told her therapist in May 2025 that her mother had been forcing her to deliver drugs for several years.
